How to Ground Yourself After Deep Energy Work
Why Grounding Matters After Deep Energy Work
Reiki and other energy therapies can leave you feeling beautifully open, light and expanded. That openness is a gift, but it can also make everyday life feel a little overwhelming. After a deep session — whether in person or as a distance treatment at home — your energy field is still settling. Grounding is the gentle art of bringing your awareness back to your body, to the floor beneath you and to the ordinary, nourishing rhythm of daily life. It is not about shutting down the experience. It is about integrating it so you can carry its calm into the rest of your day.
The First Ten Minutes: Breathe and Orient
Before you rush to make a cup of tea or check your phone, give yourself ten quiet minutes. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and let your hands rest on your thighs. Feel the weight of your body being held by the chair. Then try this simple breathing pattern:
- Breathe in through your nose for a count of four.
- Hold softly for two.
- Breathe out through your mouth for a count of six.
- Pause for two, then repeat five to ten times.
As you breathe, look around the room and name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell and one you can taste. This sensory orientation is a classic grounding technique. It tells your nervous system that you are here, now, and safe. If your mind drifts back to the energy session, simply return to the feeling of your feet on the floor. Your body is your anchor.
Gentle Movement and a Mindful Walk
When you feel ready, move slowly and deliberately. A short walk is one of the most effective ways to bring energy down through your legs and into the earth. If you can, walk barefoot on grass, sand or a clean floor for a few minutes. Otherwise, wear comfortable shoes and take a steady, unhurried pace.
- Walk for ten to fifteen minutes, ideally outdoors.
- Notice the rhythm of each step and the contact of your heel and toe.
- Let your arms swing naturally and your gaze rest on the horizon.
- If you feel spacey, press your feet down firmly with each step and silently say, “I am here.”
Stretching or gentle yoga can also help. Try a forward fold, a seated twist or simply shaking out your hands and feet for thirty seconds. The aim is not to exercise hard but to remind your body that it is solid, capable and present.
Eat Warm, Rooted, Nourishing Food
After deep energy work, cold, raw or heavy foods can feel jarring. Choose something warm, simple and grounding. Think of meals that grow below the ground: carrots, beetroot, potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips and squash. A bowl of root vegetable soup, a small portion of porridge with cinnamon, or scrambled eggs on toast can be deeply settling.
- Drink plenty of water or herbal tea — ginger, peppermint or fennel are lovely choices.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and very sugary foods for the rest of the day, as they can amplify spaciness.
- If you are not hungry, have a small bowl of warm broth or a few dates with almond butter.
- Eat slowly, without screens, and notice the warmth and texture of each mouthful.
Food is not just fuel; it is information. Warm, cooked, minimally processed meals tell your body that it is safe to relax and digest — physically and energetically.
Rest, Baths and Sensory Boundaries
Deep energy work can be as tiring as a long hike, even if you have been lying still. Honour that. Plan a quiet evening if you can. A warm bath with a handful of Epsom salts or a few drops of lavender oil can help draw energy downwards and soothe the nervous system. After your bath, wrap up warmly and avoid loud music, intense films or crowded spaces.
- Dim the lights and lower the volume in your home.
- Spend time in quiet company or alone, whichever feels more grounding.
- Write a few lines in a journal about what you noticed during the session.
- Go to bed early, with your phone in another room if possible.
Sleep is the deepest grounding practice of all. Many people find that the night after a Reiki treatment brings vivid dreams or a long, heavy sleep. Both are normal. Let yourself rest without guilt.
Honouring Your Own Pace
Some people feel fully back in their bodies within an hour. Others need a day or two of gentleness. There is no right timeline. If you feel tearful, unusually tired, dizzy or emotionally raw, treat yourself as you would a good friend: with warmth, patience and a blanket. Avoid making big decisions, driving long distances or having difficult conversations immediately after deep energy work.
Grounding is not a one-off task. It is a relationship with your own body. The more you practise these small rituals — breathing, walking, eating well, resting — the easier it becomes to return to everyday awareness without losing the peace you have gained. Be kind to yourself. The energy will settle, and you will find your feet again.
